 | The state of California current YOM program is great, why screw it up. As it is now, the driver supplies a vintage pair of plates (average cost $150) and transfers them for a $35 fee, then pays just $10 per year extra to keep them. What was published in the Sacramento Bee (but not mentioned here) is that these new plates will be flat (no embossed "CALIFORNIA"), and use the current 7+ digit numbers, probably because the 50s and 60s old 3-number/3-letter (SAM 123) have been used up and/or are waiting to be sold in a dealer's stock.
